In Waffle House Chop Suey, Markeidric reinterprets Edward Hopper’sChop Suey by placing the iconic themes of quiet human interaction in a distinctly modern setting. Set in a Waffle House, the painting centers on a table where a plate of waffles sits untouched, accompanied by cell phones casually placed on the surface. The phones aren’t in use but serve as silent markers of our current reality—ubiquitous, always present, yet not the focal point of conversation. The figures around the table engage in their own individual moments, their eyes occasionally meeting, but largely absorbed in the shared physical space of the diner rather than each other.

Behind them, the diner’s vibrant interior buzzes with life, with other patrons in the background casually interacting, their forms blurred to emphasize the primary group at the table. A striking mural of a pawn—a symbol of strategy, choice, and sometimes futility—dominates the window, subtly playing into the themes of life’s moves and decisions, much like the figures before it. The mural’s bold, almost surreal presence contrasts with the simplicity of the table scene, suggesting the larger world outside, while the figures remain focused on their small, intimate corner of the diner.

Through this contemporary setting, Markeidric captures the way technology and social spaces coexist, transforming the once quiet solitude of Hopper's diner into a modern-day scene where connection is still defined by proximity, even if not always by direct interaction.
