Halftime
Halftime
Following Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl performance, Markeidric was deeply moved and created the painting Halftime immediately after the show—channeling the energy, symbolism, and significance of the moment while it was still electric in the public consciousness. This work captures more than a performance; it captures a turning point in contemporary American culture.
At the center of the painting stands Kendrick Lamar. Surrounded by a sea of dancers whose bodies are interlocked in motion, painted in bold blocks of red, white, and blue. Together, they resemble a living, breathing version of the American flag united in movement.
Markeidric’s style in Halftime is bold and contemporary, with exaggerated forms, strong contrasts, and stylized realism that feels both grounded and dreamlike. His brushwork is expressive, capturing not just the physicality of the dancers but the emotional weight of the performance. The composition leans into repetition and rhythm, mimicking the choreography and sonic cadence of Lamar’s live show.
The cultural impact of both the performance and the painting is profound. Kendrick Lamar’s appearance on the Super Bowl stage was more than entertainment—it was a cultural assertion. It brought themes of identity, resistance, and pride to the mainstream spotlight. Markeidric’s painting mirrors this impact by using visual art to archive and elevate a fleeting moment into something enduring. It speaks to a contemporary America where art, music, and protest intersect—and where Black creativity continues to redefine national symbols and narratives.
